Red Ink….So what?

Posted by: karonhiawaks on: November 15, 2009

I find that school has changed so much, not just the setting or the students, but the teachers too. Teachers today seem to baby their students. Like the whole issue about red ink, I think thats just silly. If red ink is gonna scar you then I think you have bigger issues at hand. I never felt bad if my teacher corrected my stuff in red, I just figured it was easier to see. Trust me I use to have red ink all over my worksheets!!! I think kids today gotta toughin up, and we as teachers have to stop babying our students. Yes we should be compassionate but still firm.

No matter the color, blue, pink, purple, or red you still got the answer right or wrong. Kids should see the things they do wrong so that they can improve. We cant just be positive about everything they do, and ignore the things they do wrong. If all we do is praise them for the positive things and ignore the negative things then we end up with kids talking back and getting away with whatever they want because they dont understand  consequences, or they’ll end up falling apart in the real world. In the real world your boss tells you when something isnt done right, he doesnt sugar coat it, and your boss doesnt care if he hurts your feelings. In the real world you have a job to do, and if you cant do it right then there’s someone else that can. At part of school is preparing kids for the real world, and if we cant do that then they’re gonna have such a hard time when they get out there.

Im not sayin to be a total hardass on your students, definately praise them when they do something right, but we shouldnt be scared to psychologically damage them by showing them what they did wrong. If you do use colored ink then dont destroy your students work by marking all over it, you can make tiny indications where something needs to be fixed ect…Whatever color ink you do use you still have to show the student where they made a mistake. Keepn in mind  if you always correct in pink, then maybe pink will become psychologically damaging to your students.

Media in the classroom…

Posted by: karonhiawaks on: November 8, 2009

I think that media in the classroom is a great advantage to not only the students but to the teachers too. It gives teachers room to be creative and to teach in a way that will intrigue the students and keep them interested. Besides all that students today seem to know everything there is about technology, as teachers Ithink that its our job to get involved in their world and use what we can to help them learn!

I want to teach nursery and kindergarten, so im not sure how much technology I would be able to use in the class room. I know I could bring in movies ect to show them, but to have them actually make something im not sure how that would work? In the older grades for sure there is so much you can do with them! Im not a teacher yet so I dont actually know the curriculum for nursery, and kindergarten but i would assume its fairly simple. Im just trying to think of ways that they would be able to use media in the class…Well i guess they could do a photo collage on the computer, i mean if that 4-year-old girl can do it on the pc commercial then nursery and kindergarten would be able to do it too!

I have to admit  I can only recall using a computer in elementary once, and I think that was in grade four. I think my family got our first computer when I was in grade 5 which was like 1997. Then came highschool, and somehow I learned everything about computers in a flash! Then my parents couldnt get me off the computer….but still in highschool the only time we used the computers was to print something we typed for class, we never made an Imovie, or a blog, or did anything cool with the computer. Which is sad because I think I would have enjoyed my classes a lot more if they let us create our own webpage, or anything like that. All teachers should take a course like this and learn as much as they can about how to incorporate media technology into their classrooms! I wish my teachers had this kind of experience, I think it would have benifited everyone.

Blog#1- Our first class

Posted by: karonhiawaks on: October 27, 2009

The class seems interesting, like we’re going to learn a lot of new things. Right now though it seems a little over whelming looking at all the assignments. Im sooo glad that we don’t have to go downtown twice a week!!! I mean it’s nice to go downtown, but not when you have to get up super early and take the stinky old train. Word of advise the 4:30 train is the worst!!!

I only became part of the whole online social network about 2 -3 years ago. At first I wasnt that into it, but now im on it like everday!!! I even get status updates from facebook sent to my cell lol yes im that addicted!!! Its just so super easy to see what your friends are up to without having to go to their house, now im not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing?

Back on topic…I love   facebook! I only became apart of facebook about 2 -3 years ago. Now all of my friends are on it and it’s just so convinent to know what everyone’s up to when ever I want!!! Its nice that I dont have leave my house to know whats going on, but some might say that thats a problem…not really socializing? Me and my friends uaually plan things on there anyways so maybe it has its pros and cons. As I was reading the article ” Why youth heart social net working sites” I thought of my sister. Shes one of the few people that I know that wont make a facebook page or myspace, ect… She says that its a “government conspiracy”  because they can know what your doing, who your friends are, ect…I was like come on your not a gangsta lol. I dont think that there is anything wrong with social networks like  myspace or any of the many other ones out there. I think it gives kids a place where they can express themselves, and its also a place of their own. As long as it isnt abused, or used for bullying. Parents should have some control over the computer and what their kids are doing on it, but i also believe that parents should give their kids some level of privacy! I never got into twitter especially adding all these famous people…i dunno if its just me but i dont really care what they think or have to say, would they add me and read my tweets? Probably not. I prefer seeing and knowing what my friends are up to!

I started reading rethinking technology in schools and I couldnt believe Julie Amero’s story!!! Being arrested for pop up’s is ridiculous!!! Im not sure what schools should do about this, because its something that could happen to anyone, makes me kinda nervous that something like that could happen to me.
